Today we left Derby and headed for The Kimberley’s. All
excited and anxious to see what lies ahead for us we left quite early.
We arrived at Windjana Gorge as our first stop for the
night, after many photos of the stunning ranges that surround the camp ground
we headed off to Tunnel Creek. The road from Windjana to Tunnel Creek is
certainly not as smooth as what we had just driven on and with plenty of
washouts and dips we had to keep the speed slow. We managed to lose the pin from the winch,
something to replace when we get back to town.
Tunnel Creek is so much fun! It is so dark that you must
carry a torch. You climb down into a tunnel and walk along the inside, through
water that can be as low as your ankles or as high as your thighs, depending
where you are. The water was freezing but the cave you walk through is
beautiful, has waterfalls down the falls, a section of the roof has caved in
which permits you some light for a small amount of time, but then back into
darkness as you walk through water around the corner to the final stretch of
water to the end of the cave. We didn’t walk the final water crossing, it
appeared quite deep and we had heard just recently that a croc was spotted, was
still great to get some photos and see it!
When we returned from Tunnel Creek we went on a walk, we had
planned to do the medium walk (about 30 mins) but somehow continued on the path
of the Hard walk and walked almost right to the end. It was great, we got to
see heaps of crocodiles swimming in the water, luckily there weren’t any close
by when we had to walk right next to the gorge. We also came face to face with
a wild Kangaroo that was more than happy to pose for a photo.
On the way back from Tunnel Creek we stopped at an
‘attraction’ Lillaloonla Station.
We got back just in time for sunset (photos) which looked
amazing against the vivid red and black ranges.
We had a really nice stay at Windjana and the entire camp
ground was full, very busy time for this part of the country.
Photos are below of the ranges around Windjana Gorge, some
of the crocs we saw and some photos of Tunnel Creek :)
